Introduction
Realism is a literary style that shows life as it really is. Realist writers write about ordinary people, their daily life, problems, feelings and relationships. They do not show an imaginary or perfect world. They try to present real human life.
Main Features of Realism
1. It shows ordinary people and everyday life.
2. It presents real-life problems.
3. Characters have both good and bad qualities.
4. It shows real emotions and relationships.
5. It focuses on society and human behaviour.
6. It does not make life look unreal or perfect.
Leo Tolstoy and Realism
Leo Tolstoy was a famous Russian writer. He wrote about human life, society, morality and human feelings. His characters often face real problems of life. Therefore, his works are closely connected with Realism.
“The Death of Ivan Ilyich”
“The Death of Ivan Ilyich” is a famous work by Leo Tolstoy. It tells the story of Ivan Ilyich, a successful judge. He gives great importance to his career, social position and comfortable life.
Later, Ivan becomes seriously ill. Because of his illness, he starts thinking about his life. He realizes that he has spent much of his life trying to live according to society’s expectations. He also begins to understand the real meaning of life.
Realism in the Story

Ivan Ilyich is not a perfect hero. He has normal human desires, weaknesses, fears and worries. This makes him a realistic character.
