John Donne is considered the most important Metaphysical poet. Other important poets include George Herbert, Andrew Marvell and Henry Vaughan.

Main Features:

Philosophical and religious ideas.
Conversational and argumentative style.
Use of scientific and everyday examples.

2. Discuss the Conceits Used by John Donne in The Canonization.

John Donne uses several metaphysical conceits in The Canonization. A conceit is an unusual and extended comparison between two very different things.

Important Conceits:

1. Lovers as Saints:

Donne compares lovers to saints. He suggests that true lovers can become like saints through their love.

2. Love as Religion:

Love is presented almost like a religion. The lovers worship their love and their love becomes sacred.

3. The Phoenix:

The lovers are compared to the phoenix, a mythical bird that dies and rises again. This represents the eternal nature of their love.

4. Love as a Miracle:

The poet suggests that the love between two people can become a kind of miracle that others can admire.

5. Love as a Legend:

The lovers may become famous through their love, just as saints become famous through their lives.

Thus, Donne uses unusual and intellectual comparisons to show that true love is powerful, spiritual and immortal.

4. Explain One of the Tolstoy Stories

How Much Land Does a Man Need?

How Much Land Does a Man Need? is a famous short story by Leo Tolstoy. It is a story about greed and human desire.

The main character, Pahom, is a poor farmer who wants to own more and more land. He believes that if he has enough land, he will have a happy and peaceful life.

Pahom gets an opportunity to obtain a large amount of land. However, his greed makes him want even more. He is offered as much land as he can walk around in one day, but he must return to his starting point before sunset.

Pahom walks a very long distance because he wants to get more land. Finally, he becomes exhausted and reaches the starting point just before sunset. He collapses and dies.

In the end, the story shows that a person actually needs only a small piece of land for burial.

Moral :

The story teaches us that greed has no limit. Human beings should be satisfied with what they have instead of always wanting more.
