Home assignment; Describe SQ3R reading techniques and benefit?

*Definition:*
SQ3R is a 5-step active reading formula created by educational psychologist Francis P. Robinson. The name SQ3R is an abbreviation of its steps.

*Detailed Explanation of 5 Steps:*

*Step 1: SURVEY (S) - 2 minutes overview*
This is pre-reading. You do not read the chapter deeply. You just observe.
What to do: Read Title, Bold letters, Italics, Introduction, Conclusion, Captions of images, Summary questions at the end.
Purpose: Your brain gets a map of the chapter before entering.

*Step 2: QUESTION (Q) - Convert to curiosity*
Turn every heading into a question. Your brain will now search for answer while reading, so focus increases.
_Example:_ If heading is "Types of Communication"
Question will be: "How many types of communication are there? Which is most effective?"

*Step 3: READ (R1) - Active Reading*
Now read one section at a time to answer your question. Read slowly, underline main definition, circle difficult words, write in margin.
Important: Read with a pen in hand. Passive reading is just eye movement, active reading is thinking.

*Step 4: RECITE (R2) - Close book and speak*
This is the most important step. After reading one section, close the book and try to explain it loudly as if you are teaching someone.
If you cannot explain, you did not understand. Re-read again.
You can also write 3-4 lines summary without seeing book.

*Step 5: REVIEW (R3) - Final check*
At the end of the chapter, review all questions and answers. Check your notes. After 24 hours, again quickly review. This stops forgetting.

*New Example - Topic: "Global Warming"*

1. Survey: See headings - Causes, Effects, Solutions, Graph of temperature rise.
2. Question: Why is earth getting hot? What are top 2 solutions?
3. Read: Read to find that CO2 and deforestation are main causes.
4. Recite: Tell yourself "Global warming happens because of greenhouse gases, effect is sea-level rise..."
5. Review: After 2 days, see only your notes and recall full chapter in 5 minutes.

*Benefits - 5 Major Advantages:*

*1. Concentration Power Increases:* Because you have questions in mind, mind does not wander.

*2. Long-Term Memory:* Research shows if you recite, you remember 70% more than silent reading. Best for exam.

*3. Saves Time in Revision:* During exams, you don't need to read full book. Only your questions and recited notes are enough.

*4. Makes You an Active Learner:* Instead of just reading like a story, you interact with the book.

*5. Reduces Exam Anxiety:* Because you have already tested yourself in Recite step, you are confident for final exam.

*Limitation (for extra marks):*
SQ3R takes more time for first reading than normal reading, but it saves 3 times more time in second reading.

*Conclusion:*
SQ3R is not just a reading method, it is a complete study system. For Major 1 students who have theory subjects, SQ3R is the key to score distinction with less stress.
