Class assignment; what do you understand about self awareness?
*Answer:*
*Introduction:*
Self-awareness is the foundation of all life skills and emotional intelligence. It is the ability to understand your own thoughts, emotions, strengths, weaknesses, values, and motives. Socrates said, "Know Thyself" - self-awareness is the first step to knowing oneself.
*Definition:*
According to psychologists, Self-awareness is the conscious knowledge of one's own character, feelings, motives, and desires. It is the ability to look inward and observe yourself objectively.
*Two Types of Self-Awareness:*
*1. Internal Self-Awareness:* Understanding your own values, passions, goals, ideal self, reactions, and impact on others. Example: Knowing that you get angry quickly under pressure.
*2. External Self-Awareness:* Understanding how other people perceive you. Example: Knowing that your friends see you as a helpful and calm person.
A person needs both to be truly self-aware.
*Components / Areas of Self-Awareness:*
1. *Emotional Awareness:* Recognizing your own emotions as they happen. (Am I feeling angry, jealous, or anxious?)
2. *Self-Assessment:* Knowing your strengths and weaknesses accurately.
3. *Values Clarification:* Knowing what is most important to you - money, honesty, family, success.
4. *Personality Understanding:* Knowing your nature - introvert or extrovert, etc.
*Model to Understand - Johari Window:*
A famous model by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham explains self-awareness in 4 parts:
- *Open Self:* Known to you and others (name, behavior)
- *Blind Self:* Known to others but not to you (your habit you don't notice)
- *Hidden Self:* Known to you but not to others (your secrets, fears)
- *Unknown Self:* Unknown to both (hidden potential)
Goal of self-awareness is to increase Open Self.
*Importance / Benefits of Self-Awareness:*
1. *Better Decision Making:* When you know your values, you make right career and life decisions.
2. *Emotional Control:* You can manage anger, stress and anxiety because you recognize them early.
3. *Better Relationships:* You understand how your behavior affects others, so you communicate better.
4. *Academic and Career Growth:* Knowing your strengths helps you choose the right subject and job. Knowing weaknesses helps you improve.
5. *Builds Confidence and Leadership:* Self-aware people are confident, not over-confident. People trust them.
6. *Reduces Stress:* You stop comparing yourself with others and focus on self-improvement.
1. *Self-Reflection and Journaling:* Write daily diary - What did I do well today? What made me angry?
2. *Seek Feedback:* Ask trusted friends, teachers - "What do you think about my behavior?"
3. *Mindfulness and Meditation:* Spend 10 minutes daily observing your thoughts without judgment.
4. *Personality Tests and SWOT Analysis:* Do SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) analysis of yourself.
5. *Learn from Mistakes:* Instead of blaming others, ask "What can I learn from this failure?"
*Barriers to Self-Awareness:*
- Ego and over-confidence
- Fear of knowing negative truths about oneself
- Always busy, no time for thinking
- Ignoring feedback from others
*Conclusion:*
Self-awareness is not a one-time activity, it is a lifelong journey. It is the mother of all life skills. Without self-awareness, a person cannot develop public speaking, empathy, or critical thinking.
